Geometry

A course in logic, proof, and the shape of things

If you've ended up in a geometry class, you've probably already asked the question every geometry student asks sooner or later: Why do I need to do this? Will I ever use this?

It's a fair question, and it deserves a real answer instead of a shrug. Here it is: the value of this course rarely lives in the math itself. It lives in what the math trains you to do.

Geometry is where most people first practice building an argument that actually holds — starting from what you know, using only valid moves, and arriving at something you can prove is true, not just something that sounds right. That skill is called deductive reasoning, and once you have it, you start noticing it everywhere: in a persuasive ad that skips a step, in a plan that assumes something nobody checked, in an argument that feels convincing but doesn't actually follow. You may never again calculate the interior angle of a decagon after this course ends. But you will keep using the habit of mind this course is really teaching — looking at a claim, asking what it rests on, and deciding for yourself whether it's actually earned.

None of this is new, and none of it is entirely yours to discover from scratch. Every proof in this book was built on work done centuries before either of us was born — by Euclid, laying out the rules of argument in Alexandria some 2,300 years ago, and by everyone since who checked that work, extended it, and passed it on.

That's this course, too. You're not inventing geometry. You're learning to see what generations of careful thinkers already worked out, and picking up the same tool they used to do it: logic, applied patiently, one step at a time.

How this course works

Each unit below pairs a set of short online lessons (15–30 minutes each, built for one sitting) with an in-person Review & Practice Day, where you'll work problems and get help with anything that didn't click. Read a unit's lessons at your own pace, then bring your questions to class.
